Tip chart
Airless spray tip chart
Short answer: the first digit doubled is the fan width in inches at 30 cm from the wall. The last two digits are the orifice in thousandths of an inch. A 517 sprays a 10 inch fan through a .017 hole. Thicker paint needs a bigger hole. Never fit a tip bigger than your sprayer's max tip.
How to read a tip code
Graco's reading rule, from their tip guide.
- First digit × 2
- Fan width in inches at 30 cm from the wall. 5 × 2 = a 10 inch (25 cm) fan.
- Last two digits
- Orifice in thousandths of an inch. 17 = a .017 hole. The hole sets how much paint comes out.
A 317 and a 517 have the same .017 hole and move the same paint. The 517 spreads it over a wider fan, so it lays a thinner coat.

Fan width is at 30 cm from the surface. Water flow is Graco's published figure for water at 2000 psi. Graco notes thicker paint flows less than water. Sizes outside Graco's LP and FFLP flow tables show no flow. Coating bands are Graco's guide; the paint maker's data sheet comes first.

Paint makers' data sheets come first. If yours gives a tip size or thinning rate, use it. Solvent lacquers need the RAC X solvent seal kit (248936).
Spray tips for walls, doors and fences
Graco's rule is small fans for small surfaces, big fans for big ones. These are our starting fans.
- Walls and ceilings 8 to 12 in fan Interior walls, ceilings, exterior walls. LP515, LP517, LP519, LP619 Tips for walls and ceilings
- Doors and trim 4 to 8 in fan Skirting, architraves, doors, cabinetry. FFLP210, FFLP310, FFLP312 Tips for doors and trim
- Fences 6 to 10 in fan Palings, decks, cladding. FFLP310, FFLP410, LTX313 Tips for fences
- Production work 24 in fan Tilt panel and roof sheets, big pumps only. WRLP1221, WRLP1223, WRLP1225 All spray tips
Biggest tip each Graco sprayer can run
One handpiece. More handpieces lower it.
| Sprayer | Max tip, one handpiece |
|---|---|
| Ultra QuickShot | .016 |
| Ultra 390 | .021 |
| Ultra 395 and 450 | .023 |
| Ultra 490 XT | .025 |
| Ultra 495 XT | .027 |
| Ultra 650 XT | .029 |
| Ultra 695 XT | .031 |
| Ultra 795 XT | .033 |
| Ultra 1095 XT and Mark V XT (230V) | .035 |
| GMAX II 3900 (petrol) | .036 |
| GMAX II 5900 (petrol) | .043 |
Running two or more handpieces lowers the max tip. Graco lists the Mark V XT at .029 for two handpieces and .023 for three, and the GMAX II 5900 at .029, .023 and .019 for two, three and four. Check the product page for others.
Match the filter to the tip
Handpiece and pump filter, same band as the tip.
Fit the handpiece filter and the pump filter to the same band as the tip. Too fine a filter on thick paint starves the handpiece. Too coarse a filter on a fine tip blocks it.
| Tip orifice | Graco filter | Wagner and Titan filter (our match) |

When to change a tip
A worn tip costs paint and passes.
A tip wears every time you spray. The hole gets bigger and the fan gets narrower, so you need more passes, get more overspray and use more paint. Graco rates a new .017 hole at 1.17 L/min of water at 2000 psi. If wear opens it out to .023, it passes 2.15 L/min, Graco's figure for a .023 hole: nearly twice the paint, through a fan that is now narrower.
On production work that adds up fast. A worn tip puts more paint on the wall than the spec needs, takes more passes to cover and throws more overspray onto glass, floors and the next unit. The tip is cheap next to the paint and labour it wastes.
- Fit a new tip of the same size when the fan has shrunk or the edges have gone heavy.
- Keep spares of the tips you run most in the van, so a worn tip gets changed on the day, not next week.
- If your sprayer counts litres (the Ultra 395 and 450 SmartControl display does), note the reading when you fit a new tip. You'll learn how many litres your tips last on your usual coatings and can price them into jobs.
- Abrasive coatings such as block filler and some primers wear tips faster than acrylic.
Pressure
Lowest pressure that gives a clean fan.
Run the lowest pressure that gives a clean fan with no tails. Graco's LP and FFLP tips spray at up to 50% lower pressure than standard tips. Less pressure means less overspray and longer tip and pump life.
Tails? Turn up pressure, or thin the paint.
Common questions
Are airless spray tips universal?
No. Tips and guards are made for each brand's guard system, and guards come in different threads (7/8 in and 11/16 in). Email spray@airlessspray.com.au with your handpiece model and we'll check what fits.
Can I use a Graco tip on a Wagner sprayer?
Only with a guard that fits the Wagner handpiece. Check the thread before you buy. Email us if you're not sure.
What size tip for interior walls?
A 515 or 517 for most interior acrylics. Go to a 519 for thicker paint or a 619 for ceilings and big open walls.
What tip for doors and trim?
A fine finish tip such as an FFLP310 or FFLP312 for doors, and an FFLP210 for narrow trim.
What tip for strata and commercial repaints?
Usually the same acrylic range as residential, .015 to .019, with a 6 series fan (12 to 14 in) on big open walls and ceilings to cut passes. Two painters off one sprayer need a sprayer rated for both tips at once.
What tip for roof membrane?
.021 to .025, on a sprayer rated for it. That's an Ultra 395 or bigger for .023, and a 490 XT or bigger for .025. Use 3/8 in hose for heavy material and long runs.
Know the paint?
Pick it in the spray setup finder and we work out the tip, pressure and filter from its data sheet.
